WHAT IS Ahomka?
Ahomka is Wellbeing
Ahomka is a word from the Akan language that means wellbeing in English. It doesn’t mean life is perfect or without problems, but it means feeling satisfied and in control, even when things are hard.
My goal as a counselor is to help my clients find ahomka – a sense of wellbeing. By the end of counseling, clients should feel happy with their lives, even if everything is not exactly as they would want it; and they should feel confident that they have the skills to handle whatever comes next, whether that is dealing with grief and loss, their relationships, or work stress and burnout.
Counseling Is For Everyone
Life happens to all of us, and most times we manage it well. But sometimes life gets hard and complicated, and we don’t know what to do. When you feel stuck or overwhelmed, counseling can help.
Even if you’re not exactly sure what you want – you just know that you want something to change – counseling is a safe space to figure it out. Some issues people work on in counseling are self-esteem, immigrant and acculturation issues, life transitions, peer relationships, communication, conflict resolution, social anxiety, and parenting.
Whether you want to manage a mental illness like depression, anxiety or ADHD; become the best version of yourself in your education or career; or improve your relationships at home and work, counseling will get you there. If you are a parent who wants to manage your child’s behavior better or reduce fights with your children; a child stressed about school or family expectations; or a family going through change, counseling is for you.
